My VS 3.8l has loud rev dependent squeal from one of the pulleys. sound seems to be coming from either steering pump or tensioner pulley. With belt removed i cant feel a problem with any of the pulleys ( no stiffness to turn or undue play). Any suggestions for isolating the problem?

Try spraying some CRC/WD40 on one pulley (not where the belt runs) and then run the car.

If the sound disappears you have found the culprit.

If the sound is still there, repeat one by one until you find it.

Put a socket on the tensioner and push it down, if you stand to the side of your car watch and see if the tensioner moves moves perfectly up and down. Iv had one that that pulled down on an angle and caused the belt to squeak over the pulley.

Thanks for the advice. Did as you suggested. Started with tension pulley and squeal vanished

Obviously if the sound returns you will need to replace it.

Putting a new pulley on the tensioner is not hard, just remember to take it off the thread is reversed.

Depending on when you last changed your drive belt and tensioner, it might be worth just replacing them both - it's cheap insurance.

Repco regularly does 15-20% off Gates drive belts and tensioners
