Get some 2nd extractors, get some 3.45 diff gears from a VL from the wreakers fitted, make sure the trans is serviced and running well, get the injectors cleaned, etc......lots to do mate, just up to your budget.

Are they Hard to Install?

You mean the shift kit ? To tell you the truth I couldnt personally do it, I helped my brother, he knows what hes on about, but you do get instructions and diagrams and its fairly straight forward.. Go to your local Autobarn, the stock them.. and let me tell you its not only a better drive then the old slug box but a shift kit is actually good for your tranny due to reduction in slippage and wear.

How positive are you that VL diff gears fit ?, Will an LSD diff fit into a open wheeler housing ?

did you manually shift if not do so it will hold a little longer but practise before you race again so you get it perfect

take all the weight possible out of your car ..... including passengers spare wheel and jacks etc anything that doesnt need to be in there take out.

make sure your car is warm aswell this will help a little

a cold air intake will help (cheap way out is to wack a pod on the end of the pipe just before the airbox and get rid of the airbox..

get som1 in your car and get the to put the acellerator all the way to the floor and make sure that thebuttefly in the throttle opens as far as it can... if not then tighten the cable accordingly.

and if you take of the throttle body and the elbow piece theres a bellmouth (like a little plastic cup) take this out for better air flow...

thats about it for little to no cost mods you could do to get you the advantage.

taking the bellmouth out will give you a rough idle

you said on the bigger scale but you also said you have no money...that kinda contradicts.

Remove bellmouth...free
CAI...$70
if your racing on a private property as you said remove the airfilter alltogether just for the run you will pickup a few hp there
try throwing in a bottle of octane boost too there about $19 for the ones that boost up to 7 units can't remember the name but there at big w in a black bottle with proffessional strength octane boost on it

1996 VS Statesman Series 1 V6
What year MR2?

A mk1 or a mk2.

Mk1 has a 100kw 1.6litre 4AGE motor (4AGZE if imported)
Mk2 has a 3S-GE which is a 2litre twincam 16valve throwing out a healthy 127kw......

My mum has a Mk2 with 104,000 genuine kms on the clock.

I have a 1996 VS Statesman, my sister has a 01' Holden Astra,
and my mate has a 1983 Dick Johnson Grandprix LE XE falcon 4.1 turbo
(one of 24 made)....

and the mr2 beats them all...

Let us know how you go second time around.
