Not really a fad, been happening for 20+ years, this just happens to be a viral campaign coming out today.

this is my perception on it,this is basically for people who decide to be hippies when it suits,generally they didn't give a ****,but oh no there's a viral video about it lets jump on the bandwagon an do it because it seems to be the cool thing to do.i give it three weeks before it's uncool then they go back protesting about the environment while they live in a house on a property that used to be a nature reserve that's using coal electricity.

For some people you're probably right, though I wouldn't generalise an entire planet to this demographic - some people have a genuine interested for one reason or another. Even if you just see this as an incredibly effective marketing campaign, which can't be denied, it is very effective.
