Hi all,

I’ve got a rattling/squeaking noise coming from engine Bay. I’ve been to see two mechanics one said it was the tensioner And idler pulleys which I replaced and the noise is still there the other mechanic that I went to said it was the water pump which I replaced and the noise is still there if anybody has any idea what this could be could you please let me know. Thank you.

Don't drive it like that. That sounds internal. I'd be dumping the oil and looking for flecks. Hopefully you've caught it in time and the cam is not chewed out.

I'll tag @RevNev I'm pretty confident he would have heard that noise before.

Cam lobe and lifter failure by the sounds of the vid.

If you have replaced all those items and the noise is still there, remove the drive belt and run the engine for 1min only and see if the noise is still there, if it is you are going to need to open her up and check the lifters and camshaft lobes for damage/wear.

Good time to go shopping for a bigger cam IMO.

Thanks for the info guys, I was hoping it wasn’t the cam or lifters. But by everyone’s responses I think it might be, Looks like she’ll be sitting in the garage for a while

As the other guy said remove the drive belt and run the engine for a bit and you’ll know for sure if it’s a driven accessory i.e. idler pulley, water pump etc or internal engine noise

Does it have AFM ?
And
If you place the turtle shell back on,
It will sound louder ?
And it idlers a bit rough with it using 2.1 > 2.6 L/100k at idle ?

Why I ask, is that my 2012 VE L77 sounds similar, and has since I have owned it,
I mentioned it to Brighton Holden a few times,
And they said that’s normal for a AFM engine,
Which I knew was BS,
But it’s still going and never misses a beat at 239,xxx k/s
Originally Purchased in 2013, it had only done 17,xxx k/s, was 10 months old.

Remove the plugs.
Remove the rocker covers.
Check for loose rockers.
Get someone to rotate the crank by hand and observe each rocker moves roughly by the same amount.

Update: I dumped the oil this afternoon and there was no flakes in the oil. I even cut open the oil filter all clean. I put some HPR 40 in it, see how I go I guess. Thanks to everyone who posted a response

Hey mate,

Yeah it’s got AFM. The noise has only been there for about 2 weeks. I’ve only had the car about 6 months, it’s got 135000 ks on the clock.
