Welcome to Just Commodores, a site specifically designed for all people who share the same passion as yourself.
We all need it so it's a fact of llife,go diesel. My vito returns 750-820 around town ,fully loaded aircon on.
Thanks for clearing that up torch. The larger vehicle has effectively just had a 40km/h collision with a fixed object and the smaller vehicle an 80km/h collision with a fixed object, not survivable for the occupants of the smaller vehicle.
He's talking about Crumple zones.
Thanks for clearing that up torch.
without going to much off topic. There are plenty of reasons why someone doesn't want to drive a small buzzbox to save a few dollars of fuel every week. Might have a family, be used for work, or even just the comfort of a larger car. Plenty of room for 5 people on big trips. So saying "get a smaller car" isn't always applicable. Especially in my case, I'd be using heaps more fuel driving a 4 cylinder with no guts.
yeah fuel consumption is usually less on a diesel, however if you plan on keeping the car for a while, you need to look at the bigger picture
Whilst many diesels are more economical on fuel, compare the service/repair costs of the average diesel over it's life compared to an average petrol engine.
In most cases it doesn't look so good for the diesel. We have 3 diesel Colorado's in our fleet at work that had to get the injectors replaced at 60-70,000kms due to failures. $6000 - not covered by warranty. That's a lot of fuel..... A full set of injectors for most petrol engines would cost less than $1000

Well no, the frontal offset impact rating is evaluated on collision with a car of equal mass going at equal speed, they just test running the car into a barrier at 64km/h.
You can compare the safety to vehicles of equal mass, but extrapolating it to lighter versus heavier cars, ie will a 4 rating heavy car be better off in a frontal impact with a 5 rating smaller car, probably, but they dont give enough details of how the final rating is calculated.
The side impact is with a fixed mass getting fired into the side of the car, so this is comparable as is the pole impact test as it doesnt involve another vehicle.
