15/16" from memory. But I could easily be wrong there.
It probably doesn't make a difference, but can I assume IRS?
Or is it a solid axle?

Can you get a slide gauge onto the nut?

It’s an M22 thread so it will be a 32mm socket. I’m not at home otherwise I’d be able to confirm for you ‘cause I have a nut left over in my shed from an old job.

I thought around 30 mm? But that was for a m80 diff (Vx v8 LSD).

Just measured VR M76 and got 26.3mm (1" 3/32) but I think that is an early pinion so the later pinion may be different.

I reckon you’re right for the M78 too. I’m sitting here thinking and the nut head is non-standard being smaller than standard.

I think there are 2 sizes, I've had rebuild kits with different size pinion nuts. I think I normally use a 30mm, I have a deep 30mm to suit the later diffs that have the extra coupling support on the end of the pinion (M80) but I can't remember what I used on the older M78. I'll have to check the garage later as I probably still have an old one floating about in my box of old diff ****.
