Needing some advice.

I’m going to get the grommets an old school remote controlled car each.

Tamiya Hornet, Grasshopper, Grasshopper 2. That kind of thing.

I’ve never owned a propped remote control car. Mum and dad kept cheaping out on Kmart cars.

So these classics would be a good entry car they can race most places.

Of course I can buy the kits but I assume that I need an ESC and a remote control thingy.

Have I got that right?

Yes, you buy the car as a kit and will need to buy the control gear separately. A good hobby shop should have it all available

somewhere down in the garage I have
iu

as well as

I’ve had a look at a couple of ho by shops but their rices are a bit OTT and no stock.
(I’m not even going to edit the auto correct. It’s glorious)

I can buy online much cheaper (still buying Aussie) but not certain exactly what other bits I need.

When I looked for ESC there weee quite a few types.

The controller as well.

I think the ESC will depend on the type of motor and battery you plan on using.
Might be easier buying a complete kit with everything included.

Go to a hobby shop and pick their brains.

I was actually thinking about these the other day and wondered if there had been any advances in battery technology for these things. charging the batteries for these was always interesting for 10 minutes of run time.

You may well spend 1-2 times the cost of the car on a charger, batteries, remotes, and speed controllers.

Before choosing a car look into parts, My kids have started driving my rc's and because they are older models finding parts online can be hard and then a couple of weeks for them to arrive.

Battery tech is pretty good now. Lipo's have good capacity and most can be charged in about 1hr

Lots of models are sold as RTR or ready to run and include everything.

You will still have to choose brushed vs brushless and lipo vs nimh.

The RTR kits generally come with a slow charger and very basic remotes
