from the research I have been doing into rebuilding my 6HDD auto, the main differences are as someone mentioned the bell housing and the electrical connection. If you get a new aftermarket wiring loom for the box(internal wiring) it will suit both the early and later boxes so I cannot see why you could not just use one of these but use the connections for the 13pin plug

I maybe wrong but it looks like there are no other electrical differences between the 6HDD and say a 8HDD box

From memory 7hdd has uprated cooler lines and valve body (larger ports and solenoid in convertor lockup circuit) over the 6hdd. Both have the bellhousing as part of the case.
7hdd will fit in place of a 6hdd if you swap over the line fitings on the case.

VT trans in a VS requires major cutting on the bellhousing to clear the RH exhaust and the convertor cover cannot be used. IIRC the loom is a direct plugin.

try and find a 5hdd, 6hdd or 7hdd. that way your not going to run into any surprises and it should be a simple swap and drive deal

5hdd and 6hdd are different and can't be swapped.

incorrect as some are the same. i should have been more specific in my post. A 5 hdd from a vs (13 pin) should be totally interchangeable with a 6hdd and a 7hdd. However a 5hdd from a vr (12 pin) is not the same and would not be interchangeable without loom and computer modifications

You should check the VZ section as you have posted in VR VS.

Saying that, the VY was the last of the ecotec and VZ is alloytec so it may be different?

Yes, two different bellhousings.
