You can use a ratchet tie down around the middle of the tire around its circumference. Tighten it just enough that the lip of the tyre is touching the rim. Then try and pump them up.

I've never had any dramas, haven't needed to use the above method, but apparently works pretty well.

In deed it does.....

Easy as mate. Rub a little dishwashing liquid around the inside bead area of the TYRE, then stand the wheel upright, holding the top of the tyre use your foot and push like buggery on the back face of the rim working the inner bead into position, you might have trouble with the last bit so if you cant get it over the lip don't panic, just leave it and the air pressure will pop it on.
Now turn it round so the front of the wheel is facing you, once again a little dish washing liquid, and apply air pressure to inflate it, you might have to apply a little weight on various parts of the rim to close the gap momentarily to allow it to hold pressure, works each and every time. ( reason why I use dishwashing liquid is its slippery as **** and its easy to wash off after wheel / tyre assembly is done:blah blah:

Good idea, but the dishwashing liquid can actually cause the rear bead to slip off, once pressure is applied to the front bead....The best thing to use in this instance would be a little bit of soap.....Once the back bead is on, allow the soap to dry (about 5 minutes) before attempting to seat the front bead.
