When I turn the ignition on the windscreen wipers automatically come on for a few seconds and then stop in the middle of the windscreen so I have to flick the lever a couple of times to get them back into positikn

I'd say its an ecu issue. So scan it for a start. That s hopefully narrow it down.
Then the real issue cou be a simple wiring or fuse problem.

Is there anything you have done to the car recently before this issue arose. (even if you think it could be unrelated)

All I can think of is I changed an indicator globe about two months ago. It just started doing it about a month ago

It could also be the motor on the fritz.
