mysterious engine rattle VSIII V8

I have what sounds like a mechanical rattle deep within the motor of my VSIII 5 litre ute. It is apparent on idle and seems to chase itself slightly. The mileage is 135000 and the motor pulls like a bull and runs sweetly. Any suggestions?

has it got an aftermarket exhaust sytem? could be that the extractors are vibrating against the chassis of the car! pacemaker headers are renouned for causing a rattle!

It has, but there are no extractors fitted....System seems secure otherwise.
