- '97 Caprice 355ci & VZ SS Ute
So my VZ SS L98 was giving me some grief.
Its Symptoms:
- Very Poor Fuel Economy (300k's to a tank)
- Very Rough Idle & When Pulling Into A Car Park
- Cloud Of Black Smoke When Giving It ****
- Smell Of Running Rich
- Leaving Black Soot On Driveway
I went back to GM Motorsport who tuned the car and they want $150 to run a diagnostics on the car (ie: plug a tech 2 in)
I was pointing at o2 sensors being faulty as not much else can make it run like that. Problem with the VZ's is they run 4x o2 sensors, and they're very pricey compared to older model Holden sensors.
I spoke to a member here, Dirbatua, and he put me on to a sponsor here who sells everything you need to run a full Diagnostics.
Without hesitation i purchased it, for only $70 you would be crazy not to!

So i ran the diagnostics, and was able to point the finger.
At the start i was very confused as it was running at the start, but it suddenly just read 0 completely. luckily Dirbatua was able to clarify that the computer would be relying on the cold start tune then once it was warm it would rely on the o2 sensor to do its job.
Next step was to call around and get prices:
Bursons: $110 each P/N: EGO-106
Repco: $127 each
Holden: $147 each
I went to Bursons to go pick them up as they had to order them in, but they were two different brands. I requested Bosch sensors, but one was a Walker. I wanted Bosch because the sensor reads from the tip, and not the sides (which you'll be able to see in photos)
So i only took the one home, and got the genuine Bosch part number and ebay it. I was able to have one shipped from Kentucky, USA for $64...
Removal Of Sensor
Passenger Side Sensor Compared To New Bosch
Old Sensors Compared To Each Other
My Concrete (Poured Some Water So It Wouldnt Stick)
In the end, the job took about 20mins and was very easy. i think it was a 22 open ended spanner. i took it for a drive and she feels amazing now! and no more cloud of black smoke!!
So Big Thanks To Jason @ Envyous Customs For All The Help! You're a bloody Gentleman with all my annoying Emails haha
also a big thanks to Dirby for putting me on to him! seriously guys his Diagnostic kit is awesome and i cant recommend it enough!
