VK 3.3i, V6 VL in Production
Motorkhana's are a great way to come to terms with understeer & oversteer.

I had a VL (abeit we modified the suspension all round) and I found it one of the better balanced cars I'd driven. Was excellent and sharp turning-in with not a hint of understeer of oversteer.

Wasn't the VL based on the same chassis as the earlier commodores, therefore being the same as the Open Rekord which were 6cyl cars? From memory a very similar opel model (the Rekord E) was available with a 6cyl engine?

Yes you are right. The VB to VL was based on the opels and yes they were available in a 6 cylinder. Not sure how big and what its output was but knowing european cars, I would wager it had a fair bit of tow.
Google opel senator, You'll be suprised.

I have found VN commodores to be worse in the wet.

I had to quote this.....

Try a VN rolling on 17x8 245/45/r17's, With an Ecotec motor & th700 re-worked box... In the DRY It's dangerous..... Other day in the wet, I did a full 360 on the freeway when i went from 2nd to 3rd gear broke traction.....

Ecotec in vn = Very quick & Dangerous ride. The torque for the VN is crazy haha

Cheers

As above, it doesnt take alot of power for these things to loose traction.

I must admit to being astonished at the expense and work some here do to modify their VLs, they must get much satisfaction from it, spending $40, 000 on doing up a VL isnt unusual, even though everyone knows you will be lucky to get back half what you spent if you sell the car later

I can only appeal to young drivers who do this to take an advanced driving course, as the usual driving instruction teaches you nothing about catching a car if you have overdone it on a corner, or get into a drift, etc

Ive been driving for 46 years with only 1 minor crash, but ironically we learned more back then, before radial tyres, there was much less grip on the road and especially with a wet road, we had to learn how to cope with skids, drifts, locked up brakes, etc

so that would make you at least 64ish. well Harry i'm very piss*d that you have isolated VL drivers. so what if they modify their cars. how about torana owners??? i used to own two of them and they are much more dangerous than a VL will ever be. i agree with the fact that most young people should do an advanced driving course.

have you posted this in every vehicle variant because it's people like you that give people like myself a bad rap to the general public for driving a VL, (although some people do it themselves). My g/f learnt to drive in a torana with a 308 in it and has never had an issue with the power.

and furthermore, how did you learn to cope with skids, drifts and lockups when you were young??? i'll be guessing that would be on a public road?

i'm sick and tired of people preaching "dont do this and dont do that" if its within the boundaries of the law then you can't do squat.

dont take this as personal harry but you have stereotyped all VL drivers into one category. i have a two year old son that loves riding in my car and yes its heavily modified. but i would NEVER put him or anyone else on the road in that danger.

thats my 2c

was just about to say the same!:ranting:

i had my first and only accident when i was driving a 4cyl nissan bluebird when i was 17, my first car! it had nothing to do with speed or car power, just a lack of concentration. im now 27 and over the years i've had about seven or so other cars four of em being commodores ( two V8's, two 6cyl ), one worked 4cyl escort and now own a WRX as well as my V8 VK SS. i have not had any accidents since the first one at 17 and these cars have all been alot more powerful.

any moddified or un-moddified car can be dangerous and for you to say dont mod a VL cause they are already powerful enough is a bit stupid! why single them out? the cars nowadays have up to three times the power from factory than the cars of 86-88', even the new 6cyl commodores are about 60-70kw more than the VL's were new ( N/A, not turbos )

it all comes down to the driver and their attitude not the car.

its like blaming the gun and not the trigger puller for killing someone

I had a scare a couple of years ago, driving my gf of the times bluebird wagon, handled worse then a vn- gutless as anything, drove it flat nearly everywhere. Came around a corner one night, over a little bump, rears started spinning, the boat started rocking and it was a mess.. Managed to keep it but if it was my car with at least 3 times the power, it either wouldn't have happened or it would have been easier to control
