Toolkit suggestions for a looooong roadtrip?

I always take a few important spares on remote/long trips. 10 litres of drinking water (Per person), hoses top/bottom radiator, radiator cap, odd moulded hoses, belts and of course at least a meter of heater hose. Hose clamps, joiners for heater hose to bypass heater if it blows, plugs for them...

Holden makes it's Last VZ Commodore

I was disappointed to see the VZ go as I believe it was the second best looking model of that shell (VX the best). Still cant get used to the VE, front carries to much wheel flare and the rear looks like it has been hit up the ass. Holdens ugliest car since the HD or VK in my opinion.

    Desalination in SA, your views

I would love to see it built down south but I think it would make more sense if it was put up around Dry Creek with some of the out flow to the salt pans, allthough it would need some serious pumps to send the water back to the resivours. It could use some of the water pumped back into the...

    VZ SS help

I have had this a couple of times, but it is better than it idling at 1800 - 2200 with the air on. Mine will do this sometimes. Can be a little disconcerting when you tap the brakes to turn off the cruise controll, it turns off: then the car accellerates away or just revs high in neutral. 5.7 or...

    Shall i white wall?

I reckon a good rule of thumb is Anything that was built without the option of radial tyres is ideal for proper white/blue walls. 2 1/2" wide minimum Any car with chrome bumpers is ok for white/blue stripe tyres. Red stripe should have blackouts and chrome bumpers. 1" wide maximum No chrome on...

    Rear wheel siezed onto hub

Pretty common problem, I used a small crow bar and a bit of rubber on the end. Just a bit of pressure from the hub to the back of the spoke and a rubber mallet on the tyre and they eventually came off. Dont ever hit the rim it will bend. Don't forget to clean the rust of the spigot and inner of...

    Oil Service Light

Not a 100% sure about the V6 but I had the oil service alarm a few times for different reasons. I believe it is a low oil pressure alarm for the motor, If it doesnt clear you either have no oil pressure or the sender is stuffed. If it does clear you have only had a low oil pressure event. I...

    standard head gasket vs copper

Im my experience with copper head gaskets they expand a little and anneal on the first heat cycle thats why I retension them when hot on the first cycle. In my opinion they are not ideal for anything with a iron alloy face as the expansion rates differ to much. If you are using the copper to get...

    standard head gasket vs copper

I cant help you with the boost limits of the different gaskets, but you would normally only use a copper gasket if you were removing the head often or just couldnt get the original gasket. Did you use anything on the gasket faces? Does the head block face use any O ring type seals? (Im not...

    Hillman Minx Enquiry

If this is your first classic rebuild, I would recommend trying to get one that has everything in place. It's the little parts that may seem incidental that make the difference when finished. Murphy's law always makes those small missing parts hard or expensive to obtain. I have spent hours...

    Top 100 crap cars

I would have to disagree with a couple of your choices All of the mid to late 80's Aussie cars with the cylinder head higher than the radiator have had problems. Mostly due to peanuts not filling the engines up fully with coolant. When filled and bled they were as good as any other...

    power tools

We have quite a few different brands of cordless power tools in our workshop. The two that have lasted the longest a panisonic and a Hitachi cordless. Teenager faces five year stretch

Having your car stolen really sucks, what is worse is having it burnt. I have allways been of the belief that the sentence should be equal to the same as having stolen the equivelent value in cash!:yeah: There is a huge difference in penalty between stealing cash and a car of the same amount...

Best techniques for running in a new motor

Running in a new car is a little different to a new engine. Diff, brakes, gearbox and suspension all benefit from an easy start. Warm it up before (better with driving than idling) hard work, no constant RPM for the first 5-800 km's. Gentle clutch use and no excessive slipping and if you are...

Wax or Polish? What gets the water to run off?

Cement dust is nasty as the lime etches quite quickly. Lots of wax over a good polish. The dust will still mark it but it should not get through to the paint if you give it an occasional rinse.

    meguiars NXT tech wax

Im not arguing with you minux, it is not all it's cracked up to be. It's one of the better ones for a off the shelf in any store. I allways go back to Autoglym super resin polish it's easy to put on, can be found easly and gives a very nice gloss for the money. Zano and Poorboys are good gear...

    meguiars NXT tech wax

Assuming you have shaken it well before applying each time about 15 mins is ample for it to dry. I get a fairly good result with tech wax liquid by being frugal with it's application. When applied thickly it takes a lot of polishing to remove. If it's streaky you may have an uneven coat. A...

    Cable Clutch Or Hydraulic Best?

Nothing beats a good linkage clutch set up. The only problem they have is they will need periodic adjustment. This is not all bad though as it will give you a good indicator of the wear of your clutch. Hydraulic is easy though especially if you cant get the angles and mount points you need...

    Need opinion on crank Shaft

I wouldn't worry to much about 0.010" undersize. See what undersize bearings you can obtain for it. I built a 186 with 0.060" undersized mains 0.025" rods and it is still going fine 25 years later. What you need to worry about is the finish and roundness of the journals. They must measure the...

    VZ 6L 6spd gearbox noises

I was under the impression that they will idle at higher revs 1000rpm at a high road speed. If you slip it into neutral at 20+kmh does it still idle at 750rpm? Cheers

    VZ 6L 6spd gearbox noises

I think you will find these have the same manual gearbox as the Gen 3. The boxes seem to have quite a bit or roll over noise and are quite noisy when the input RPM is under 1200 rpm. I have read in an extract from a Tremec manual that the gear train doesn't get adequate lubrication if they...

    turret/roof mould on utes

You are not alone had a similar experence but I was loosing the covers for the bolts in the rear bumpers. Lost 3 before I glued them in. Use a little sikaflex (Window install sealant) on the clip to molding and the bottom of the clip to the channel in the roof. That stuff will hold them for ever.

federal government to fund ford development?

Bring back the button plan! Stuff the free trade agreements! We need Industrial diversity in this country. Ford have been using a lot more imported components lately as well as Holden. Does any one know the Aussie content on these cars? I would be surprised if they were over 80% now.

    turret/roof mould on utes

They come of and go on easly. Just lift the rubber on the windscreen up a little and catch the end of the mold and lift it off. The plastic clips will easly detach. Make sure that the end near the back window you lift up then slide out. The install is done in the reverse. Put the clips on the...
