    VXR Brake Pads / Rotors

Everyone will say something different. But my experience is that OEM discs and DBA disks are delivered to customer within specification, meaning no run-out. RDA and PBR by comparison were a headache. And slotted discs tended to be noisier and dustier. DBA street would be the most likely of the...

    RSV wheel touch up paint

Hey guys, Hoping someone may be able to recommend some suitable paint to touch up one of my wheels. As it turned out my car got stolen a few weeks back and the (presumably) kids trashed one of the wheels. And the only second hand useable one I could find has some minor gutter rash which I'm...

    New battery

If the previous one lasted 6 years I'd be tempted to go with the same again. Appears you can still get AC Delco parts as per add below, although I would try to find a local supplier rather than using ebay - difficult to return a battery this way...

    VF v8 LPG ?

Years ago, I think around 2010, I had my AU2 XR8 (200 KW) converted to sequential multipoint gas injection. Good system for the time - I think it picked up the signals for each individual petrol injector and 'redirected' them to the gas injectors. On startup and normal driving it worked very...

Matt's ZB RS-V wagon long term review

Up to about 38 kkms now. Just had brake booster software updated which was uneventful Brakes themselves well under 1/2 worn - probably the one good thing about factory pads is they are easy on wear Discovered that if I just fold on old black t-shirt in half and sit it on the dash in front of me...

    Looking for Help Acquiring Parts

Just wondering, if you are in USA couldn’t you just buy Regal GS bits? And as regards the rear muffers a muffler shop could presumably adspt up some generic ones?

    High mileage ZB Commdores

Was just browsing on Carsales and noticed a few fairly high mileage ZBs, for example: - Diesel wagon with 235,000 kms asking $20,888 (!) - ZB RS V6 with 183,000 kms asking $23, 995 (!) - VXR with 173,000 kms asking $31,101 (!) Admittedly these are fairly high prices and I can't see too many...

Matt's ZB RS-V wagon long term review

Ended up replacing the Contis at 31 kkms. Only one of them was properly down to wear markers (I think due to dealer swapping out a scratched rim for a better one before I bought the car) so probably could have gotten about 35 kks otherwise. Probably fair enough given how grippy they are. Tyres...

    HighBeam no longer working?

Also consider - if you used a scotch lock to tap into the high beam feed wire it may have actually severed the wire core. I noticed the actual wire inside the insulation is very thin when I stripped the insulation back to solder on the feed wire for my light bar relay. Whick might be part of the...

Matt's ZB RS-V wagon long term review

Just a routine update Has now done 30 kkms and no problems to date other than headlights being a bit weak which I have addressed with LED globes and a big LED light bar behind the grille which I have covered in another thread relating to headlight upgrades And have received an email about the...

    Brake Booster recall

I just got an email about this too. Called the local dealer and they are booked out for a bit but am dropping it there in a few weeks for a re-flash. Doesn't seem like a big deal - would probably be worse if it was a mechanical problem because then there would be a wait on parts...

    ZB Commodore LED Upgrade

Finally sorted my high beam issue properly. Installed a 20.5 inch Bushranger light bar behind the grille. Chose this one because: - About as long as will line up with the slot if only one grille slat removed - Not very deep at about 60 mm - None of the reflectors are a ‘flood’ pattern which...

    ZB Commodore LED Upgrade

After a bit more consideration I think I would recommend the narve LED low beam conversion since this does work quite well. But the high beam spreads too much which is probably due to rhe reflector itself being pretty ordinary, and possibly the led light source not being ideally placed. So not...

    192 rw kw VF V6 38kw gain with o.t.r.

If they really do get that much more power its very impressive. I'd be tempted to get them to have a look at my RSV. Would be great to see a few timeslips to back it up though. I'm not sure exactly how the maths works but it seems that if a car has 20% more power then all else being equal it...

    ZB Commodore LED Upgrade

Sorry, I think you are right. So must bevsome other reason VE lights were better, most likely bigger and better reflectors I suppose. But as a general theme, older designs that so use the H4 system should still have a potential advantage...?
  16. M

    ZB Commodore LED Upgrade

Bit of an aside but one extra reason ZB lights not as good as VE for example is that VE used H4 globes for the low beams which switch to a high beam pattern when high beam is selected. So once selected have all four globes set to high beam rather than only the inner two as on a lot of newer cars...

What to buy to replace the ZB?

I don't look like needing to replace my RSV wagon for a while as its only done about 30 kkms, bit if it had done a lot more I'd be tempted to look for a low mileage RS wagon. Not much else as quick and comfortable as the ZB for similar money

    Spot lights

Easiest way to wire them up is to buy a pre-made loom complete with relay and switch and a power take of crimp and a wiring diagram. But hard to explain it in words but if we accept this new loom is based around the relay and a bundle of wire: - the power lead with inline fuse holder goes to...

Does my VE SS look written off

Looks pretty serious. But assuming that the floorpan from about the diff forward hasn't moved and so all the suspension and driveline still work properly surely it wouldn't cost $18k just to fix the hatch area? Roof could be another issue I suppose if it had moved. But little chance of replacing...

    Zb lgx radiator drain

At least on the V6 this ‘tap’ is very hard to get to. I say ‘tap’ because thats what it appears to be on my RSV. Only needs to be turned 180 degrees counterclockwise to open it. I ended up using a 19 mm 6 sided socket on a 3/8 drive ratchet to turn it very gently until it would start draining...

    ZB Commodore LED Upgrade

PS - I do agree though about badly aimed lights being a pain. In a perfect worked everyone gets to see where they are going. Only offering the above for people who want to see where THEY are going, without messing things up for other people. I think a lot of ZB owners have been a little bit...

    ZB Commodore LED Upgrade

Thanks for the heads up about the manual! I downloaded it and may well make use of it one day. But at present since it does not seem to have an index and I don't have enough time to scroll through 9000 pages I've had a look elsewhere also. Although if I was smarter I'd probably work out how to...

    ZB Commodore LED Upgrade

Finally got around to installing LED globes Ended up buying Narva part number 18407 Not cheap at $130 per set on sale at Supercheap Auto and needed 2 sets, although have since seen them for about $115 per set But I figured going with a known brand and having the option of local return is good...

    Zb query

I'd agree with the above. Either is a good thing. L4 is probably quicker off the line and probably up to 60 km/h and in real world use no slower point to point. But I suspect the V6 is a little quicker from 100 km/h on, which is why Police would bother spending a little more for highway cars, I...

Matt's ZB RS-V wagon long term review

Definitely not as reliable as a Camry. And warranty not as good as eg. a Stinger. But I can’t see any reason for it to be LESS reliable than a VE or Vf.... Aussie made Holdens and Fords were great value in terms of bang for buck but probably not the benchmark for reliability. I think ZBs will...

Matt's ZB RS-V wagon long term review

Another fuel economy update. Alice Springs to Tennant Creek. 500 km at mostly 134 km/h, or 138 indicated. Car loaded up with luggage etc. Aircon set to 16 c. Likely at least some headwind as most days tending northerly. 8.9 litres per 100 km or ULP 91 calculated from fuel receipts. So it seems...

    Tyre replacement choice

Hey guys, still plenty of tread on the Conti's on my RSV at 23 kkms, but considering changing to 235/50s as per the Calais tourer when it comes time to replace them. I imagine outright cornering grip might be a little less, but ride could be a bit softer and quieter?

    Fuel consumption

I used ro have an FG Ecoboost which is similar size and power and found it used about 10 litres per 100 km on fairly open 20 km drives to work including a mix of side streets, main roads, and freeway. So 12 suggests a lot more stop start, or shorter trips...? Seems with a larger and more...

    Replacement pads and rotors

Could probably get away with regular street series ones on the back since do less work than the fronts, so less likely to wear as fast or warp... fronts will get pretty hot quite easily if you use grippy pads.

    Aftermarket wheels

On the topic of tiny brakes I've been thinking about VF Police single pot front calipers... If the ZB has the same caliper bolt spacing as rhe VF and other GMH products these might be a bit taller and allow a bigger front rotor? Shouldn't be too hard to find a disk that will work IF the caliper...

    Replacement pads and rotors

Dunno if they are still available but Ferodo DS Performance pads would go nicely on plain 4000 series rotors. Very grippy al mu of 0.46 which from my experience occurs all the way from cold to smoking :-) Bit dusty so hopefully with dark coloured wheels...

    Aftermarket wheels

I think the Simmons on the white RSV might look better in Silver. Probably smaller diameter better too. I think these are 20s, there 19s or 18s would give a better ride unless needed to fit bigger brakes under them, in which case those wheels probably not best choice anyway...

    9 speed Transmission Flaring

I've had that now and then in mine too. I think its likely the 2-3 shift if I start the car and then take off gently so as to not upset the neighbours. Was having a read about the transmission design and apparently it has a fluid/pressure accumulator to store fluid under pressure so that gears...

Matt's ZB RS-V wagon long term review

Still happy. Usually after a few years of ownership I start thinking about what I could eventually replace it with. But at present there doesn't really seem to be anything on the horizon. Only way now to get a 200+ kw wagon is a Skoda Superb that would be well over $50k and involve a DSG...

Matt's ZB RS-V wagon long term review

Just a brief update about fuel economy. Still pretty ordinary around town, 13 litres per 100 km at average speed of 24 km/h and short runs. But went for a drive in the country and now sitting on 5.9 litres per 100 kms at 110 km/h consistently. Can only assume the engine was a bit tight and has...

    Punctures

Only thing to check if looking for a space saver for the VXR is the bolt pattern - I think the VXR may be 5 by 120 where the others are 5 by 115

    Coolant loss, no visible leaks

Normally if coolant was going missing I'd be worried about it ending up in the transmission..... I imagine that since radiator is under high pressure and trans cooler is low pressure water could potentially flow in only one direction. Although if you have had to top up 2.5 litres I'm not sure...
