Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

The lobes corresponding to the lifters with visible damage are clearly worn. The others lobes (and their corresponding lifters) look brand new. I would just love to have an idea what caused this so that I dont make the same mistake again. The lifters were snug in their bore, but that is what...

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

Well, lifting the heads confirmed that one lifter is broken (and stuck in the bore), and a couple of others are damaged (the rollers look horrid). Others still look brand new. IMG_20180425_165604 by MrPtnt posted Apr 25, 2018 at 5:17 PM The damaged one is still facing the right direction...

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

My lifters are crow cams LS7 lifters. I have read that LS7 lifters are slightly longer than the original L98 lifters, but I didnt compare with my original lifters.

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

So, I have measured the lifter pre-load on a few valves using a tool. I get about 7.3" length at zero lash, meaning my 7.4" pushrods would be giving me 0.100" preload. Google seems to give differing opinions on what is correct preload, but 0.100" doesnt seem radical for LS7 lifters.

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

Is there an easy way to test piston to valve clearance on these? I don't have solid lifters, which seems to be required for the clay method. Last time I turned the car over by hand and there wasn't any noticeable interference, but when I pull it all down, I would like to do it right.

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

The pushrod came loose last night, when the loud knocking noise stopped. It wasn't loose directly after the cam swap. I havent measured the base circle, and now the cam is in the car. It is a vcm883 cam.

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

I didn' grind or lap the valves, face the head or deck the block. I used a GM head gasket set. The car/parts didn't leave home, so none of this happened without my knowledge. There may of course be wear in the rocker plates, etc, but that wear would've been there before the new lifters...

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

OK, so some of the information my mechanic gave me was misleading. Oil is getting up to the rockers, it was just that he was expecting it to spray out heaps (which it doesn't on these). I have started to try to diagnose myself over the weekend, and I observed that all of the rockers were tight...

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

I didn't measure with a tool, but from zero lash on the 7.4 rods I have just over 1 full turn to fully torqued, which I believe is normal?

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

The guy looking into it was busy and will call me back - so no progress yet. So far, VCM has been very good to deal with, so hopefully it stays that way. If anyone has any tips of what I should be looking at next, please let me know so that I can diagnose in parallel. The push rods seem to...

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

Will call them tomorrow. Any idea what could cause this? I didn't think it was possible to stuff the installation of valve springs up...

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

The K-motion springs are the springs that VCM gave me with the cam. I used the retainers/locks that came with the new springs. I am using stock rockers. Valvetrain by MrPtnt posted Apr 16, 2018 at 8:50 PM

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

These are the pieces of the K-Motion springs. I found these along the length of the head, so are breaking off all springs. What could possible be causing this? The car has been run for a matter of minutes (and never driven) since the cam/etc swap. Spring Pieces by MrPtnt posted Apr 16...

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

OK, so pulled one of the rocker covers to re-check pre-load, and it was between 1 turn and 1 1/4 turns. Unfortunately I did find bits of the valve springs broken off under the rocker covers...

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

Either was my mechanic (if it was after about 2pm today), or is a funny co-incidence. I just put the lifters into the guides (the fit snugly), lowered the lifters into the bores, torqued up the tray. I was under the impression that the direction of the holes in the lifters didn't matter (the...

Extremely noisy lifters after cam swap (new LS7 lifters) 2008 SSV

I have just replaced my cam (VCM 883), lifters (Crow cams LS7), lifter trays (OEM), pushrods (7.400 – came with cam from VCM), valve springs (Dual springs), oil pump (HP Manley). And something is horribly wrong. When the engine went back together, I started it and it sounded fine initially...

    Updated VCM Cam Selection Information?

I am not too worried about the 10k trip, as it is over in about 10 minutes - but maybe I am just naive? I will post my thoughts about it after it is in and running properly.

L98 - Missfire, lifter noise, Low oil pressure when warm

As you can see from the title, the VE SSV I just bought has a few issues. 1. I an getting a missfire on cylinder 7 when warm. I have swapped over plugs, leads and coil - missfire stays on cylinder 7. 2. It has some valvetrain knocking when warm - not the worst I have heard, but not horrible...

    Updated VCM Cam Selection Information?

Hi guys, I am About to buy a VCM cam, so I watched their VCM "how to choose a camshaft" videos. But the camshafts mentioned in those videos seem to be superseded (they are not listed as being available for selection anymore). Is there updated info regarding their newer cams? (I could only...
