what did you do to your car today?

Put a crazy idea into action. Engineer gave me the points to cut through and took about 1 metre of floorpan out. Next job is to send to the fabricators and hope he can follow the engineers directions.

    304 upgraded manifold

You do realise that these 3 numbers listed for your camshaft sheet are the compatible lifter part numbers for the camshaft. All of which are flat tappet lifters. As mentioned flat tappet and roller won't mix because the cams are ground different. Flat tappet cams have a slight angle on the...

    Vp ss crate motor dilemma

Actually the 215kw option motor for the HSV was 350ci. To get it to 355, it requires a 30 thou bore job.

    Toluene as race fuel additive

Never mixed fuels, but have tested a couple of different fuels with one of our race cars on a dyno. We started with BP Ultimate to get a base figure, drained the tank and switched to Avgas. Managed to add a bit more timing and saw a nice increase in performance. From there we went to Sucregen...

    T5 in a vr statesman????

In regards to what sort of power a standard T5 can take is like asking how long is a piece of string. Some have be known to blow up with not much more power then stock, were others have seen over 300hp and still held together. A lot also depends on your driving style. You get basic upgrades...

Dumb Things done on boat ramp?

Currently racing on the odd sportsboat(Shaw 650, Thompson 750) when work permits. 9-10 years ago I was working as a sail-maker (Quantum Sails here in Perth, now Evolution Sails), ran campaigns in Etchells, S80's and Offshore, as they were the main clients I worked with. I was always a bit big...

    The JC RC Car thread

This is a bit of a concern. At the moment I'm tossing up between a Traxxas Slash VXL and a HPI Blitz SC. Looking for an electric truck to muck around with when I can't be assed servicing or fixing up my Baja 5B/T(have all the gear to convert from buggy to truck, depending on which tyres have the...

Dumb Things done on boat ramp?

Dumbest thing I have probably done was on a ramp that was new to me. Lowered the keel, went to leave and the boat went nowhere. Took a couple of minute to realise I didn't quite have the water depth to have the keel completely down. Dumb things done racing(sailing), I could probably write a...

V8 5l 5 spd into vrvs ute wagon or sadan is it easy?

Being in W.A. you will still need to send off a modification application to the Department of Transport before doing the engine swap. Having had dealings with the vehicle safety and standards mob before, it can be a bit hit and miss on whether you will need any engineering certificates.

304 Hi all some info on a twin screw charger on a 304ci

It looks to be similar to the Sprintex charger I used to have on a Landcruiser. Which means there is no need for a manifold as above, because it will suck air through the rear of the supercharger and discharge out the top (just need to get creative with the inlet piping, depending on where its...

Pulling five litre- leaving transmission in place.

    1) 6 bolts holding the trans to the motor. Add another 3 if auto for torque converter to flex plate. 2) Chock up the front of the transmission with wood before unbolting from the motor. 3) I usually use all 4 corners of the heads which link up to a balancer bar.

What can I do with a 5 speed?

A rebuild kit is always a good start with new bearings and syncro's. Then there are small upgrades like billet bearing retainer. Or the expensive upgrades like straight cut gears and dog engagement.

    Check this out! - Corvette/Speedboat

For a poker run boat, it wins in the looks department, but for that price I'd rather a MTI turbine boat (quicker) or anything from Skater or Nor-tech (better built and quicker boats)

[Ecotec] VX manual conversion 5 speed steps/guides??? anyone got anything?

Best thing would be to buy a Gregory's/Haynes car manual. That should have all the information you need to do this. Like this: Holden Commodore 1997-06 Haynes Part No. 41743 While it's not a step to step guide on how to do a conversion, you just have to piece it together from different...

    Wow, $4000.00

Because the majority of the racing we do is with Saloon cars which have to run T5's. Occasionally we get a stockpile of spare parts to build something up for fun. At the moment it's a VS drift ute with a LS1 (if the fabricator ever finishes the cage... 12 months and counting). Straight cut gears...

    Wow, $4000.00

To determine whether $4000 is worth it or not, what exactly is everything needed? pedal box, clutch (what sort of clutch as well), wiring, tailshaft and what sort of "strengthening" was done to the box. It is quite easy to spend well over $4000 on upgrading a T5 (my last T5 gearset came in...

    Minispool tips (no haters haha)

My car has a spool. It is legal (inspectors knew it was there). It is also listed on my insurance with every other modification and they are fine with it. I went through all the right channels about it, it may of cost a bit more but my car is completely legal and insured with a spool. Not...

can a vs v8 and gearbox be taken out in one peice?

You can pull it all out together, this is how I do it most of the time. I'd recommend you get an adjustable engine leveler to make the process a bit easy as you need to tilt the motor a fair way to get the gearbox to clear everything. Also depending on what headers you use, you may need to move...

    (over)lowering = worse handling.

This thread provided a good laugh to my Tuesday morning at what some people claim. To put it simply, an older v6 with solid axle rear end can be quicker then a newer V8 with IRS through 3 different things: setup, weight and driver ability (there can be other variation, but they are the 3...

getting top dead center on vr v8

As above, although I only do steps 3 and 4. It gives me a 50/50 chance of getting the dizzy right, but saves pulling the rocker cover off. If it's wrong, just rotate the dizzy 180 degrees and your spot on (so to speak, it should fire, just set timing to what you want).

    Ridiculously stupid question about tires

You are right, you do need some flex in the sidewall otherwise it will slide. I guess what I was trying to say is that a tyre made for circuit work will have a stiffer sidewall then a street or drag tyre due to the loads from corner at high speeds. There are definitely gains to be had by...

    Ridiculously stupid question about tires

Dakster: For cornering/circuit work you want a stiff sidewall, otherwise when you turn you'll just roll the tyre off the rim. While for drag racing you want a soft sidewall (high profile) to get some flex for better traction on launching (there is a bit more to it then that when it comes to...

    anyone else working FIFO

Having a MR/HR license isn't just for driving a truck but also the machinery. All our guys are required to have HR license to operate the loaders/graders/haulpak as we drive them along gazetted roads between mine sites (hence the requirement for HR, as MR won't cover any sort of machinery).

    Gearbox oil's

With a manual gearbox, there is really no real colour it should be. If you were to drain the oil out of my manual it would come out blue (Redline lightweight gearoil). It comes down to personal preference of what the previous owner/service guy has used. It could range from red (auto fluid used)...

    anyone else working FIFO

In regards to getting a truck license, you would want to be looking at getting HR instead. I know all of our sites are HR minimum as well as most of our competitors, MR doesn't cover 3 axle trucks (most service/fitter trucks) or most of the machinery (loaders/graders/adts) that you would find on...

    vn t5 into vp

The T5 will bolt to the engine block. In regards to the crank, is whether the flywheel will bolt to it. This depends on whether you are buying a new one or using the one of the VN (Early? VN cranks had a different bolt pattern)

    Brake upgrade

Just a little error with this one. 16" Rims will clear VS GTS brakes with out a drama. These are the same calipers which came out on the SV5000 (which ran 16" rims). Also the control brake caliper of the VN/VP/EA Saloon car class which all run 16" rims. Although rotors are still dam expensive.

    200 kw 5.0 ?

    tools, which ones are good?

+1 to this. Have a look in the shops and see which spanners/ratchets/other tools feel good in your hand and are comfortable to work with. So are a bit better designed ergonomically then others and are easier to use, which is why I have a bit of every brand in my toolbox.

    vs strut brace

Dacron, I think when it comes to cracking at the strut tower, every car will be different. Some cars will be more fragile in that area then others (not every car from the factory is built the same). We have had broken power steering racks, K-frames, control arms but yet to have to repair a strut...

    vs strut brace

Have spent a lot in track testing. When it comes to a Commodore or dare I say it Falcon, both will run quicker times around a race track with the strut brace left in pit lane. Both suffer from understeer when a strut brace bolted in. Cars that we have tested over the years on this include VN/VT...
  39. F

    vs strut brace

Also not needed on the track either as they create understeer. A strut brace is good for dressing up the engine bay/bling. That's about it.

    [WA] V8 Insurance?

When I was 19, I used the RAC it insure my first V8. Although already had a couple of cars insured with them. Never had any issues with modifications with the RAC either. The more extensive ones have required an engineers report and them inspect the car, but everything is listed on my policy...
