Wow, i just got a quote from a specialised mechanic for a rebuilt t5 gearbox and all the boltons, this is a strengthened box and comes with every thing that is needed for the conversion. With postage a litle over $4000.00, this gearbox will be going into a vn i am doing up for the track.
I have done some of the sums, and if i buy a second hand box and second hand pieces off the net, then it will cost about $2000.00 TO $2500.00 and may be any other bits and pieces i have not thought of, any thoughts on this guys, this guy comes highly recomended.
Cheer's, Finchy.

Do you have a budget for the build? 4000 is a lot of change

Can you post the list of "specialized bits"? I'd like to see just exactly what they've done to this box to make it worth choosing over a T56 or TKO box.

Sounds very expensive to me. I'd look at a T56 - **way** stronger box + you would have heaps of money left over.

I just got a full T56 conversion for $4000 to suit a VN (so pedal box, loom, mounts etc), this sounds like a rip for a T5.

comes with every thing that is needed for the conversion.

To determine whether $4000 is worth it or not, what exactly is everything needed? pedal box, clutch (what sort of clutch as well), wiring, tailshaft and what sort of "strengthening" was done to the box.

It is quite easy to spend well over $4000 on upgrading a T5 (my last T5 gearset came in just under $5000, total cost was around $7500).

For those that say T56, it's going in a track car. A t56 weighs too much and will break in stock form if trying to drive it fast. TKO is a much better option over the T5 and T56.

TKO is better yes but T56 is cheaper and LOL at them breaking, mine cops a hiding behind 400kw with sticky tyres and everything that can break but the gearbox has and has been strengthened. I did smash a T5 to pieces with about 260kw though lol. Won't argue about the weight though, they are heavy.

Can I ask why on earth you wasted $7500 on a T5 instead of getting a TKO?

Because the majority of the racing we do is with Saloon cars which have to run T5's. Occasionally we get a stockpile of spare parts to build something up for fun. At the moment it's a VS drift ute with a LS1 (if the fabricator ever finishes the cage... 12 months and counting). Straight cut gears for saloon cars cost $4200 from memory. When building one up for a VK race car, we went a bit overboard and went with dogring engagment and all the other fruit (including some custom work).

T56's are a reasonably strong box. It's not the power that will break them, but changing gears quickly. While taking a bit more time to change gears would increase the life of a stock T56, when racing, slow gear changes are not something that is going to happen.

If it was a street car he was talking about, I would say go the T56, but he's talking about building a track car where weight is crucial.
