have a 97 maloo and looking for a new gearbox.. are the t5 and getrag the same gearbox or are they different ??
will the s3 vs v8's and s1 vt's gearbox fit into mine ? its in the first few of the series 3s but still with a 185i motor .

it does have 260k on the clock so should i put a new clutch etc in or just go a whole new box?
cheers, josh

Maybe describe the problems you're having?

T5 and Getrag are not interchangeable, you need to change a variety of other things to get one into the other. You can't use a V6 box either.

VS S2, S3 and VT S1 V8 5 speeds will be the same.

Way different.

T5 in earlier vs/vr- vn/vp are cable setups basically change everything from pedals to tailshaft.

Getrag hydraulic clutch setup & kick in the bum speedo sensor/tailshaft slip yoke for ecu/speedo then there are wiring differences.Dual mass flywheel etc etc
These have maf sensor like vt 5.0l.

If it's t5 gearbox easy peasy can convert to another t5 like ford 6cyl if it's the later hydraulic clutch then find a replacement...first find out what's actually in there!
Assumed vs series 3 maloo were 98-99? Earlier is series 2?

Pretty sure 97 maloo's are series 2. Can't remember when they made the maloo @ VT but they ended in late 98 & as said late 98/99 is series 3. So I couldnt see this being a series 3. Getrags had a hydraulic clutch not a cable didn't they? Let's say it did already have a getrag box then yes a series 1 VT V8 gearbox is the same.

Yep series 3 maf sensor, hydraulic cluctch master & alloy radiator also air temp sensor into airbox quick look in engine bay.

vt & vs speedo sensor & slip yoke might be different between the two.

vs had magnetic sensor bolted on extension housing & slip yoke had gear/wheel pressed onto it towards universal.

vt probably had same as v6 boxes which I think were different.

Probably crossover series 2 to series 3.
Mate had one but auto version

You're in luck though cable clutch is t5,much easier to replace or get fixed or last resort a conversion.

Change oil see if it comes good...noisey in gear on move can be bearings or gear wear.If they break usually smash 3rd out box if being a d*ck.

Other thing to check if noisey at idle push clutch in see if goes away then?

if so basically clutch related
