one of the spek terminals is touching ground/earth
if you cut a hole in door to fit spkr remove and retest
when a spkr wire/terminal gets grounded the unit shuts down but looks like its still on
its a safty thing

Pioneer dont have that problem :).

Its the installer that has the problem.

As has been said above, the speaker wires are shorting out, as for us to tell you which well youll have to pull out the deck make sure everything is soldered and insulated properly, and if you ran wires thru places where it can jam and cut thru the wire then perhaps time to reroute the place where the wires run.

To find which speakers are causing the issue.

Remove one pair from the back of the unit. Switch radio on. No sound still? Turn off Radio and remove another pair of speakers? Continue on through the speakers until it's fixed.

I wonder if this was a common earth situation?

Also, the longer the wiring is stuffed, the more likely it is that the head unit will be damaged... So you could disconnect all the speaker wires and test it and it'll still have no sound because the internal amp might have been blown. Most of the time, the IC protection does it's job though and just mutes the chip to prevent damage.

V8 Berlina is probably a big red chain store installer, they seem to send more working head units in for repair than faulty ones.
