hey guys,

I hav a bit of a problem, when i drive around the 70k mark there was a loud thud goin on. Went down to the transmission guy and he took it for a spin and what ever else. He said that it needs a service and that the torque converter is worn or something. Anyway, he is going to disconnect it. Does it matter if it is connected or not? and what is it for?

Cheers,
Shady

A torque converter is basically like a clutch and I don't think the car will run without it. Especially since the vl has a "lock up" torque converter which is electronically controlled. Its also like the flywheel in a manual it keeps the momentum of the engine turning so the driveline doesn't just stop turning when you take your foot off the accelerator.

Thats the lock-up part of the converter and all he will be doing is pulling the plug as it's electricly controlled ..
Won't hurt, the only thing that will change is ur fuel bill on long trips will go up..

does this lock up feature work in all gears, one poster said it only worked in 4th, others have said theres no lock up at all

a lock up reduces fuel consumption slightly by stopping slippage

I always thought the lockup converter "locks" in third and gives 4th gear because they don't actually have a 4th gear.

On this 3rd/4th gear discussion. When my auto shifts up from 'D'( when i push the magic button) it goes through two stages of shift. eg. 1,2,3,push button 3.5, 4. Should i seek some attention for the little fella? is this normal? It does not slip or anything (yet). :whistling

i think it locks up in 4th and stops any torque converter slippage, my converter was slipping in 4th on acceleration my simple fix was put a manual box in it. it took a weekend to do but was worth it.
