yah these arnt a toy, i highly recomend not using one in a suburben area if you are to make one.
these arnt legal as stated before and are basiclly a bazooka

lucky to have padocks around my house we head out into them and shoot.
that cannon i posted before is quite bad, two shoots and it ripped a steel fence sheet off its frame and the range of fire we could shot in the padock would be about the 300-400m mark.

im going thinking of making myself one soon and intergrate a ignition system with a spark plug so its got complete air tight seal around the igniter.

Nope cross bows are legal in wa. I have one.

Having one doesn't make them legal. You used to be able to buy them from army surplus stores, there was a shop across from the train station that you could get them and big 2 foot long kickass killing knives too.

is it true that the maximum fine for a spud cannon is around 50K?

As someone else said, doesn't matter if it's a BB gun or a 44 magnum. They're all firearms. A spud gun is defined as a firearm.

I don't know what the penalties are because all that's up to the courts to decide.

Definition of a firearm:

"firearm" means any device, whether or not
assembled or in parts and whether or not
operable or complete or temporarily or
permanently inoperable or incomplete—
(a) which is designed or adapted to
discharge shot or a bullet or other
missile by the expansion of gases
produced in the device by the ignition
of strongly combustible materials or by
compressed air or other gases, whether
stored in the device in pressurised
containers or produced in the device by
mechanical means; or
(b) which has the appearance of such a
device—

That would include a spud gun.

Either way its a joke. Comparing a kids toy bb gun to a real gun is just stupid but what do you expect these days in Australia? Everything is illegal these days.
