BCM has packed it in on my 98 VT Calais. I've done my research it seems as long as I have a matching BCM (with the right 3 digit code) and key fob from another VT, I can install it have it linked using a scan tool. My mechanic has quoted me around 4 hungy just for the module but I can purchase a second handy for 90 bucks. I told the mechanic I will source my own part and get them to install it but they're telling me that after the VS model, second hand BCMs cant be programmed for other vehicles. I've read threads on here where guys have bought second hand ones from the wreckers and they were good to go. Why would there be heaps of BCMs for sale on eBay etc if they're not able to be programmed? Not sure what to believe. I've dealt with this mechanic a few times before and they've been excellent so if they're just saying that so they can entice me to buy the part through them at an inflated price I would be surprised.

Any advice would be cool.

Cheers

Your mechanic is taking the piss. Only reason it couldn't be installed is possibly if his particular scan tool doesn't high enough permissions to link bcm/ key to pcm.

If he can't find someone that can

Would it be difficult to find a mechanic that will do it or be able to do it? I just called the Holden dealership and they wont program second hand BCMs. I'm also concerned about the shelf life of a second hand one. Even though it may have been tested by the seller, there's no telling how long it'll last.

I doubt whether second hand items such as BCMs, ABS modules, PCMs etc. ever get tested by their sellers, particularly when the donor car is no longer "alive". Having said that, BCMs are generally a pretty reliable piece of equipment. Some of our Gold Coast members should be able to suggest local places where you can get the BCM/PCM linked. According to my manual you will need either 92058-685 (VT1) or 92078-312 (VT2).

Thanks for the replies. I've rung around a few places and am having a bit of trouble finding a workshop with the right gear who's willing to do it. They're saying they dont program second hand BCMs. I'm running out of time bcos I need my wheels now. Sucks having it off the road trying to save some cash.

This whole BCM/immobiliser thing seems to me to be a real shitty design by Holden, having keys that need to be linked to the module with specialised equipment required to do it. Such a pain in the ass. Surely there would've been other ways to maintain vehicle security without this set-up.

They don't need to program the BCM, just link it to the ECU.

Could always go to the wreckers get an ECU and BCM from the same car + the key to the bcm
Replace them all and hey presto

Buy a matched pair off ebay with the fob, swap em both over, save yourself the labour cost and buy a cold slab for your troubles.

Even with the FOB you still need to marry the PCM to BCM still? for the immobilizer mostly likely?
