a lot of adware scanning programs are adware / spyware themselves, they just act as a scanner. Some will also scan and give you the results, but then will ask you to pay to remove items.
The best ones to use and are free:
"AdAware" -
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Ad-Aware/adaware.html
"Spybot 1.4" -
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Spybot_-_Search_and_Destroy/spybot.html
"CWShredder" -

I would also suggest doing an online virus scan from the Symantec website.
go here
http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/security_response/index.jsp#
and click on "Security Check" start button and follow the prompts to do the scan. Unfortunately this scan only works under internet explorer 6.
Always boot into Safe Mode to remove spyware and viruses, as the run in the background in normal mode and won't be removed. To boot into Safe Mode, Restart the computer and just after the memory count, start tapping the F8 key, if the windows starting logo comes up you have missed it, and will need to restart. If you press the F8 key correctly a menu should come up. Select 'Safe Mode' from the menu. If you have Broadband, select 'Safe Mode with Networking', this will allow your internet connection to work in safe mode. When the login screen appears, log in with the administrator account, so there is no restriction, that could prevent spyware from being removed. Once in Safe Mode, Run Adaware, Spybot, CWShredder, and Symantecs Online Scan. These should just about remove everything. Also a good idea to delete temporary internet files and temp files, this can be done by running disk cleanup. (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup.)
Another Program that is usefull in cleaning up running background programs is
"Hijackthis" -
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/HijackThis/hijackthis.html
With Hijackthis, It is a good idea to run a scan and save the logfile, and send the logfile to someone with a bit of technical knowledge. They can then suggest what to remove with hijackthis from the logfile.
You can also download a Free version of AVG Antivirus here ->
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg71free_394a763.exe
The free version has limited functionality, so would recommend purchasing full 2 year licensed version for approx $50
