Just a follow up question on crate engines,

Say if I buy a built 304 / 308, with new VN style heads etc.... for engineering and registration purposes how are these rebuilt issues classified? Do the builders keep the original engine numbers or stamp their own new ones?

If I was to buy a Holden V8 to put in a 83 VH, would I have to ensure the block used is 1984 or younger? How would I validate that?

Legally nobody has the ability to restamp a block or issue new engine numbers, not even Holden. You just change the engine number on your car registration with what ever is the equivalent of your RTA. Whether EFI needs to be engineered is on a state by state basis, and VN heads with a carb I wouldn't even bother engineering it (I doubt a lot of people bother engineering EFI either).

If I was to buy a Holden V8 to put in a 83 VH, would I have to ensure the block used is 1984 or younger? How would I validate that?

It needs to be same series or newer, so blue for VH? Engine number indicates which car it came in, there is a thread about 308/304 engine numbers, have a search.
