I had this problem this morning driving on the freeway, my right indicator would just come on randomly. When I indicate left and change lane the right one will come on after. Sooo annoying!
The indicator switch and the wiring to it would be a good place to start, but I've found the GMH switches pretty reliable compared to other makes I've owned.

The factory switches are the best but as they are over 25 years old they are getting worn out. I had one go on the VR. I replaced it with an aftermarket one as gen are NLA. Unfortunately the aftermarket ones don't go the distance and you'll be replacing it every few years if your car is a DD.
