Sorry to hijack, but what are the pros and cons of upping the base timing ?

It's the poor man's tune up. In reality the difference between a Holden Commodore SS 165i and HSV Clubsport/Senator 185i is an intake, exhaust and tune with 2° extra total timing ;)

Tuner seems against it in a thread I read but that was a while back. I can't really see it being that bad given running on 98. It never got above around 20 advance with a couple stabs of the throttle.

On a stock tune I can't see a problem with it, the standard tunes are very safe. The issue is, when you start tuning things, everything is based on 10°BTDC so if you plug in the laptop or logger etc all the advance numbers are based on this. If you advance the base timing than it throws out all the data.

How are you monitoring timing?

People who are making money from selling tunes are generally against the "cheap" method.

Your case is a little different though as you do have a cam fitted so factory tunes aren't really relevant.

When the timing is done it will be by both the scan tool and the timing light.

Tuner has advised try 12 to 13. So 13 it is and see how it goes. Luckily my mechanic doesn't care and will just do whatever we want.

Well she's at the mechanics for a couple hours getting stuff done so we will see how it goes. Dem had a brain fade filled the tank so pump won't be done today.

Well she's back. Everything bar the fuel pump was done. She still stalls in gear. IAC is definetly working. Have teed the map and fuel sensor together off one barb and shoved a bolt down a bit of hose on the other barb. See how it goes I suppose.

Oh and she was already sitting at 13 base timing. Also pretty sure the rotor cap and dizzy are 1995 fresh. Mechanic mounted the coil nicely on the fuel rail instead of our bodgy hanging it off the plug lead.
