304 double row timing(how to dial in)

hey guys silly question but how do i find top dead centre without heads on? like im not sure if its top dead centre or bottom TDC..ive got no 1 piston at top

When number one piston is at the top of the bore...

You should really be dialing the cam in and not installing it straight up.

doesnt need to be dialled in i got told.not for the 304 anyway.thought that was only if the cam wasnt really for engine ..could be wrong?

and if the piston no 1 is at top does that mean its on compression stroke?

Until you put the chain on its either at TDC or BDC as without the cam timed its not on a compression or exhaust stroke. (piston just has to be at the top and then align you links)

You should still dial it in correctly.... Cams arent always ground correctly like the card they can be slightly off.

theres only a r and 0 and i got told not to advance or retard it?

U should have got an adj timing chain.

You should dial it in correctly, you don't have to advance it further unless u want to.

I know everyone needs to start somewhere and you can't learn unless you try things, but i really think you should take this to someone who knows what they're doing. Judging by your posts, i think that's probably the best thing you can do.
