Only if you buy the whole set of modules with keys.

Getting your ECM repaired is a really good option. Post it off. Get it mended. Put it back. Action.

What is wrong with it?

It isn't necessarily the programming if is like for like (unless you have a specific tune) it is the linking of the other associated modules. Can be done with a bi directional scan tool or a Tech 2, but only if you have the software to crack the TIS authorisation.

i've just got my ute back on the road from an engine ecm exchange service.
had a miss in the engine etc.
can finally take the cans to the recycling depot - yay.

had a few issues with linking the 'reconditioned' ecm back to the vehicle.
a friend has a genuine tech2 so i went ahead with the swap, made a delco acc & paid $55 for a yrs subscrition for 1 vehicle which is all i need.

possibly due to operator error or said tech2, we failed miserably several times.
to cut a short story long, i had my ute towed to the old ex-holden dealership after speaking to them for a $150 fee to sort things out.

then i get a call saying this seems not a walk in the park like we thought it'd be & it'll cost another $175 to get on to holden-somewhere-web to access the old program (tech2win?) in order to complete the task - as they said the vin wasn't on the ecm which i supplied to the echange service.

i think the old tech2 is only good for reading codes now & not much more.
may need dealership connections to access anything.

techline connect is the new all-in-1 'app' they now use requiring an mdI or mdi2.
i obviously don't know what scan tools can do the job but i'm sure it can be done.

i have my ute back so i'm happy.

I had a similar experience with a clone Tech 2 and event taking it to Holden to get the TIS authorisation added there. After much dicking about I purchased a Vident bi-directional Scanner and linked them up no worries. This should do the trick and I expect there are others out there that are just as capable at a reasonable price. No need to TIS etc.

I went and bought a Vident i400 after reading your experiences. Support for my Apple based diagnostic interface was killed off and the Tech2 is even hard for Holden to use (for functions that require some connections) by the sound of it. So have more bases covered hopefully.

3 diag tools should make for one really good one.

You guys had me rushing out to buy a Tech 2 ha ha.

But I don't regret it. I haven't used it so much on the Commodore yet, because there have been few problems come up. But it has been invaluable working on the Trailblazers.

I pretty much suck at using it still, but I have already got my money's worth.

The live information display so I can see which parts are working when I am driving, like wheel speed sensors, has so helped me nail some annoying issues.

Same with the command functions. Just yesterday I used it to see whether it was the HVAC switch or resistor in a truck that was causing issues. The resistor was new, and it was blowing hot one side and cold the other, so I was tempted to change the switch. Hooked it up and I could see that the switch and actuator doors were working fine, and just the blower motor couldn't be started up. Could recalibrate the HVAC doors.

New resistor had dudded out so that saved wasting time and money buying a new switch and pulling half the dash off to change it over.

I like to use it to turn off that SRS warning light too, get the airbags to work again, when I muck with the seat and seatbelts in the Commodore. Nearly paid for itself doing just that in the VZ, cause they make you pay $30 every time you get someone to use it here.

The Clone Tech 2 I have is still the best tool for the job, except for making keys and linking the security related modules. It is my go to tool for exactly the reasons you outlined above. I can get live data on both scanners but find the Tech 2 definitely has better detail and the fact that it is customised to the GM vehicle you are working on provides so many additional functions and individual component control over the Vident.

The benefit of the Vident for me is that we purchased the model with the wider vehicle coverage (70 odd) so it works on the rest of our small construction fleet. I'm happy I have both - and even happier that the ATO gives me a bit of a break on the purchase.

If you can get the right TIS 2000 and can link it to the Tech 2 - you can do it all. It can be done - I just haven't cracked it yet and needed to get Jimi on the road for work so I took the shorter route. If you want some detail an what I have tried so far you can find the painful story here.

I do like this website.

All good information for all.

There’s been no mention of a ‘candi’ module so far for the tech2.

Do any of u have/use the module or do u connect straight from the tech2 to the vehicle connector ?
& is a laptop used at all ?

I use the CANDi module as a matter of course. I don't think the CANDi module is required on VY and earlier - I could be wrong though so don't take that as gospel.

No need for a laptop with a real or cloned Tech 2 an no need for the CANDi module if you use an aftermarket bi-directional scanner. Well none that I have come across anyways.

Just be aware that there are problems related to security if you opt for a Tech 2; even more so with a cloned Tech 2. You need a subscription to AC Delco to get authorisation. To get around it you need a cracked version of TIS 2000. I think the MDI with an XP laptop using Tech2win is probably a better option - but I have not used it. Just chatted with others having success with that sort of setup.

I'm still working, in the background, on cracking the code to bypass the security authorisation for my cloned Tech 2. If you don't need to link modules or program key fobs the Tech 2 is a great tool.

If you need any more advice just shout. If you are anywhere near Murrumbateman you can drop in and I'll show you how it all goes together and what you can and can't do with one.
