Hard to say without seeing the car mate, but i had to replace my rear shocks in my vx at about 80,000km because they were shagged so its possible they're ####ed.
So i just used the opportunity to upgarde to better shocks an springs all round.

they wont spring up by themselves coz there oil shockers not gas shockers, but they are probably rooted.

i was under the impression that they should be replaced around the 80,000 km mark anyway?

That's right. OEM dampers are made to a price and 80k's is about their life expectancy. They can still work well past that distance but unless they leak or make noise, you don't realise how much they have deteriorated.

My rear shocks both leaked at 80k and a front one developed a severe groan over bumps at 100k.

140,000 k's and fronts still seem ok. Mind you I would probably notice better handling if I put newies in!
Rear shockies I changed at approx 100-110,000k's. They were stuffed.
