Hey guys can anyone tell me why this is happening? Is it something to do with the strut assembly or just the bearing/ retaining plate.
I recently replaced the front suspension but had to use the old bearings and retaining plate.

You've put it together arse-about.

You can use the diagram posted to figure that out.

For starters, there is only one nut on the strut top.

Also the strut top appears to be missing its centre. That strut top has to be replaced. There’s supposed to be a bonded metal tube/spacer in it. It’s not there.

Always replace the strut tops. They aren’t a “she’ll be right” item.

I suspect there might be a few bits missing as well.

Missing the nut and washer on the strut top bearing. I'd definitely wouldn't let your cousin touch your car again.
I'd remove the struts from the car, compress the spring use the smaller nut and washer torque it down on the strut top mount (make sure the spring is seated properly before decompressing the spring). Then install into car using the big washer and one nut and it should be fine unless it was damaged by your cousin during installation the first time

The washer on the underside of the strut top is missing.
You now need to buy a new strut top as the ferrule has de-bonded from the strut top rubber.
I bet you also have a nice dent in your bonnet.
Seen this many times when I used to work in a suspension shop.

Noting that you have probably fixed it by now, you need the grey washers facing in this image called a Stop Start bearing. GM number on the pack. The silver one sits facing down over the bump stop. Above the 'Upper Strut support are 2 nuts. A 7.5mm jam nut that sits on this grey washer washer and a nyloc nut that sits at the top in the Engine bay as shown in the diagram.
