Would expect va or vt prefix...passenger side where head meets block deck face should be pad with engine number.

Efi block? turbo or trimatic pattern? heads/manifold? If car has been messed with then those things help work out what is in it.

More cars than I've got space to park!
Yep, you will need to confirm that stamping as the prefix doesn't line up with the sequential number.

If the "VN" prefix is correct it should be an "LB9" RPO 304ci 195kw roller block from a late VS or early VT HSV (comparatively rare).

If the "450611" serial number is correct, then that lines up with either a late 1973 HQ or an early 1984 VK engine, depending on the correct prefix.

When you get the correct number off the block, note down the cast date as well. It's on the front of the block between the timing cover and the inlet manifold? It should look something like "11D4" or similar, with a clock face next to it.

My guess is that the prefix has been recorded incorrectly, if it's a VK engine it probably should be "VT" or "VA"? As @gtrboyy said.
