Hey guys, I'm just finishing up the engine setup and theres a (clearly engineered) hole in the passenger side of the block near the starter motor.
I can't remember if there was anything there but it is just OPEN to the crankshaft so all sorts of **** can go in... there is no thread inside it or anything, what is it? what goes there? dipstick??? cause my sump already has a hole for the dipstick on the driver's side.

Any advice appreciated.

These engines were used transversely in the states. Holden did the decent thing and turned them around.

Holden put the dip stick directly into the oil pan, I do believe that hole is for the US models, it should have a plug in it however.

I guess you could try silicon. I'd fill the hole so it has lots of surface to adhere too.

Early 6's (pre Commodore) had a similar thing, where a dipstick went....The factory put like a ball bearing in there to seal it up.

Might throw a picture up of it later to show what I'm referring to

Here's a pre Commodore 6 cyl with the location of the dipstick....When they put the 6's in the Commodores, they put the dipstick tube in the sump...I'm not sure if the same thing occurred with the V8's....Perhaps @Smitty may know, which might solve the mystery

The Aussie V8's always had the dipstick straight into the side of the sump.

Tap a thread into the hole and locktite a bolt in there to seal it up.
