Does anybody know how I can test the coil packs on my L98 VE SS?
My Haynes car manual doesn't have it listed.

Cheers

They can't really be tested without an oscilloscope or a specific coil testing tool. If you fire the coil without a plug or a lead on it you will damage the coil, or at least shorten it's life. One slightly dodgy, and time-consuming, way, is to buy one coil and swap it around until (or if) your problem goes away.

Well I tried your idea and it worked!!! Bought a second hand coil off eBay for $62.00, and moved it around each cylinder until the problem went away.

Beats spending $260.00 for a new coil from Repco!

Thanks

easy way is to get a multimeter and check resistance between the posts. 1 post to post should have a certain resistance. im not sure what it will be on a holden, but youll soon know when 7 coils have 7ohm and one coil is open circuit.

the open circuit one is the dead one (obviously)

^^^^ Nailed it. Play the "Find the odd one out"

Can be done with a $10 multimeter from jaycar... then you can learn how to use the multimeter for other things.

when you say post to post, you mean from coil pack to another coil pack? (the main big chunky plug that connects the spark plug lead?)
The SS has 8 separate coils.
Would be good to know for next time I have this problem.

they mean between the 2 terminals on the coils. This is not always an indicator though (unless it is open circuit), but if you test all 8 and one is far out from the others, it would be the one to start with.
