They can't really be tested without an oscilloscope or a specific coil testing tool. If you fire the coil without a plug or a lead on it you will damage the coil, or at least shorten it's life. One slightly dodgy, and time-consuming, way, is to buy one coil and swap it around until (or if) your problem goes away.
i like multimeters.
easy way is to get a multimeter and check resistance between the posts. 1 post to post should have a certain resistance. im not sure what it will be on a holden, but youll soon know when 7 coils have 7ohm and one coil is open circuit.
the open circuit one is the dead one (obviously)
