Is it risky to buy a car without the service history and manuals all lost? How do people even lose such books for a car?

Yes, yes it is.

Is there anyway you can confirm the service history? Perhaps by talking to the place where they claimed they got it serviced.

Well, I lost the manual to my old car, I took it out one night to have a read and it went missing from there.
So it does happen.

But, Buying a car with no service history is a bit risky, In that instance you would just have to go over the car really well.
Normally you can tell if a car has been neglected.

But other than that, Get a mecanic to look over it and see what they think.

Of course it's risky! For all you kno the only services done to it would have been and water too ups.

there are workshops stamp service books for a price
so having no history book is still better than a fake service book.
in the case you are really interested in the car, just inspect it thoroughly.
I never worry when was the last oil change when buying 2nd hand car(bought plenty in the past),but I always open engine oil cap and check if it's dirty in there,

thanks for some tips guys. looking at a car this weekend or some time next week and if all goes well may end up getting her. The real issue though is its a HSV and thats one of the last things I would think an owner would lose...... see how it goes!

Some friends have mentioned concerns with the mileage being wound back and no way to check with no service history...... any tips guys?

Thanks for the help :)

Well even in a VT and beyond, you can very easily replace the cluster and thus the odo.

Ask where it has been serviced. If it's under 200,000km you should be able to tell what parts should be replaced when based on Holden advice, check these components to see if they have been replaced.

Check for signs of wear and tear. Can I ask what model it is? Might be able to help more.
