While you're in there check the timing chain and tensioner condition

it's only a short distance, the piece is kinda flat, should be able to skip it across the water like a stone from further up eastside.

So you were only running a tap through the thread to clean it out and the alloy timing cover cracked?
It should not have even been tight, unless maybe you used the wrong tap?
It would be good to find out why, so it doesn't do it again.

Going on the amount of rust in your cooling system you need to use proper coolant, not water or whatever else you have been using.

In the pic it looks like the top part of the crack looks a lot older than the part starting at the bolt hole, maybe a fault in the casting?
