Here is what I found with the price per litre.
1926 5c A Litre crap fuel real low octane
1930 4.05c
1940 4.75c
1950 6.43c crap fuel low 71 octane
1960 7.79c
1970 8.73c good fuel 97 octane
1980 30.61c
1990 60.35c
2000 78.27c
2010 $1.24.56
2116 $1.22.56

Now to do the conversion of the Dollar for the years with the average wage ?

Before the 1960's the cost of shipping were higher before the large tankers.

Yes generally they do but they can be cunning too. As Costco is not 24h I have seen the Caltex & Puma jump 20-30c/L after about 9pm only to drop their price again by 6am the next day. Nevertheless at least they make some effort to match. There are dozens of servos on various routes between Costco & Mango Hill/Rothwell which don’t seem to care with some of them anchored around $1.50+ even at the bottom of the cycle....not sure why anyone would give them any business.
E10 was 133 at both Puma and Woolies Mango Hill, 7/11 scooped both at 131.
