Nothing old about it, the Japanese played down how bad the meltdown was and even to this day how bad things still are.

The Japanese have a bad habit of not admitting to the truth, they still like to turn a blind eye to atrocities committed during WW2, the enslavement of foreign woman as sex slaves for there soldiers etc.

Hey, Tokyo gets stomped by Godzilla every day... they are used to disasters; what else is new to them?

Sorry, could not resist to poke some dark humor at it.

i dont think its ever been played down.
earthquake and tsunami exceed what the plant is designed for. people are suddenly surprised the plant failed. people are stupid.
even after the exceed spec event, the plant still failed in a pretty good way.

hopefully we can learn from this and design better power plants

plant didn't fail people failed
reactors took the hit just fine...
overheated because it was shut down and diesel generators got flogged by tsunami so no circulation pumps.. If they had left it running nothing would have happened..

Nuclear Power is the cleanest, safest and perhaps the one with the biggest bang for the money. The new reactors, the Breeder type, uses all the fuel and the waste. Here is a good chance to daemonize the technology.

You're probably right, people did fail but why? Most likely because maximising profits was more important than having the right people with the right training and equipment available to cope with the event.

Problem is, to prevent a total meltdown they ended up using sea water to cool the reactors down, what happened to all that sea water that was contaminated with radiation? Were told it was all contained but I believe the truth is more along the lines of either most or some of it was contained and plenty ended back up in the sea and as I understand it, they are still have issues with contaminated water leaking out from containment ponds.

Nuclear power is probably very safe when it's done properly, however we live in a world that is primarily driven by profit/greed and that leads to cost cutting where possible and scenarios where these types of outcomes become possible.

edit: How/why did Chernobyl occur?

thats not 100% accurate.
the reactor was scrammed/stopped, not the cooling system. all reactors scram with an earthquake. i think peak acceleration is the key.
the tsunami took out the diesel generators, damaged parts of the cooling system, control systems, electrical, sensors, etc etc. which hampered their ability to get things under control.
