The illegality with robodebt lay in the fact that the burden of proof was placed on those who received a notice, to prove their innocence. In other words, guilty until proven innocent, without any consultation or remedial process in place. That's not how the legal system in Australia works. You go to court & the magistrate determines if money is owed. Even worse, the supposed evidence used to issue a request for repayment was based on false information (income averaging) that couldn't stand up in court. Morrison & Dutton knew this & still sent robodebt notices.

What was Dutton's involvement in the robodebt scheme aside from being a LNP MP at the time?

The NZ Greens party have lost the plot. Clearly chasing the Maori vote but will alienate more regular green voters and so this will probably hand the election to National and heaven forbid, Act!

Commonwealth Games scrapped in Victoria.

So how much has it cost so far. And what is it going to cost to get nothing except an embarrassing asterisk in history?

This government really has a problem with estimating the cost of projects.

They are still building all the sports facilities that were part of the "bid" (I didn't realise that Vic only stepped in last year after the bidding process failed).
So surely the government has done well, they have recognised that a rushed process led to inaccurate costs and have killed it before it got too far, while still maintaining some of benefits to the regions?

Other estimation issues (airport link for example) are with feds not Vic?

It's really hard to estimate prices for something that is ongoing for many years, especially with the current economic climate.

BTW, great addition to your signature.

Suburban Rail loop just for one.

The entire project was Estimated to cost $50b, but at next calculation the first two stages alone were estimated at $200b.

But what's $150b between friends.

Perhaps they were hoping to get the money from China in their Belt and Road agreement.

So if I tell you it'll cost $x to renovate your house, amount seems reasonable and value for money but then when somebody else looks at the figures and tells me I can't actually build it for what I told you it'll cost 4 times the figure and the project goes ahead anyway (in this scenario) you're keeping the same attitude?

Just gotta suck it up as a consumer because "it is what it is"?

Or do you get shitty that I did a poor job at calculating the project initially?

They have certainly made the right decision to scrap the games. $2.6 billion to $6-7 billion and knowing those projects it wouldn't stop there. Poll shows (for what they are worth) 76% in favour of canning the games.

Putting money into affordable housing is a lot better idea.

I agree with Daniel here.
It wasn't a good look to build "temporary" housing for athletes and officials whilst we have such a severe shortage of long term housing for long term residents.
And we all know that these projects always blow out more in cost and time as the work is carried out.
