Saw a mobile phone holder advertised on tv tonight that fits into cup holders...A simple screw of the base and it locks into the cup holder...

That being said, the one the op made looks a better idea....The eyes are just below the windscreen line, if glancing at the phone for what ever reason, rather than glancing down near the gearshift...
