Maybe the airlines should equip planes now with missile warnings devises and flares just in case for the future.

That actually isn't as far fetched as it might seem. Providing civilian aircraft with some basic preventative measures might just save some lives in the future. If comparatively slow flying aircraft like C-130's can be equipped with threat detecting radar and anti-missile flares, why can't airliners? It would mean extensive re-training for flight crews but perhaps that's what things are coming to.

Well, it may become a trade-off, with much longer flight routes being necessary, which will also escalate costs. Either way, passengers will pay more.

No the cost of it will be far too much , think of how many planes each company owns then fitting multi million doller anti missile detectors to them, engineering them so they can fit in each different type of plane , then paying for the service of the computers and what so ever . Would Never happen . Enless your willing to pay at least 10x the normal amount for a flight .

Actually, I should have been more specific. Fitting the equipment to new aircraft during construction, not retro-fitting existing planes. If this sort of thing occurs again, can you suggest something more practical, other than flying a very long way around trouble spots?
