its pretty **** of Holden to not offer self DIY upgrades now that there is no Holden, they should have released it so we can update and mod our mylinks. this is what shits me about car companies, they are your best friend and look after you leading up to buying the car, and a little afterwards but 6months on they ignore you like you have covid. can never update any of the software yet every other appliance like TVs and sound systems, vac and almost every other device has updates yet cars never do!

That's got nothing to do with the whitegoods/electronics makers having any more respect for the customer ... it's purely because there's zero chance anyone's ever going to take their TV into JB HiFi to get the software updated. :)

Our 2013 Panasonic stopped getting updates around 2017, and the apps that work have been disappearing since, so that "smart TV" no longer has Netflix or YouTube or ABC iView or SBS On Demand ... that's no better than Holden's app history for MyLink. :)

If I’m not mistaken, some TVs allow side loading apps so there are ways around manufacturer shitfuckery in removing features. As is, removing features is wrong and in each instance where such occurs there needs to be a concerted effort by all purchasers to make formal complaints to their states consumer groups and ACCC. Such shitfuckery which occurs post sale must be stopped.

With MyLink, there is no real way that we know of to side load anything because the software within has been cryptographically signed and no mechanism exists for 3rd parties to release their own signed code or 3rd party tools to easily update the mylink software.

The fact Holden has stopped building vehicles and GM/Holden has in essence left the market, there is nothing to stop this mob unlocking MyLink and allowing others to step in and provide map updates, apps and such. The only thing stopping them is their bullshit proprietary mindset on a product which uses open source code. Hypocrisy, go figure

GM/Holden are in my opinion “******* of the first order” and we don’t need to be making second hand excuses for them by stating other whitegoods manufactures are also bad…

Bad is bad and must be called out when it occurs, be it Sony, Samsung or Holden…

intellectual property, licensing and profits are the main reasons for no diy options.

manufacturers of most products today do not offer a "diy upgrade" option with the majority of them taking extra steps to implement security features to prevent people modifying and repairing their devices.

you only need to look at apple to see how much r&d a company will do to prevent such things because they openly do it as they dont give a/f and they know their customers will just accept it.

what you dont see is many other manufactures do the same things but they hide what they are doing because they dont want the backlash.
you will find that with those "other appliances" as soon as the manufacturer decides it is EOL you will find no update path which is only around the 5 to 7 year mark.

this is going to get way worse in the automotive sector with new vehicles having "glass cockpits" and the ev market on the rise as the ev will require specialist training and tools to troubleshoot and you know the manufacturers are going to lobby hard against 3rd party options under the guise of intellectual property.

The contradiction is that DIY user map data updates is a thing in the USA but down under it’s wrapped in a dealer visit to the service department and whispers of “proprietary” while handing over more $$ than needed. Such differences have little to do with intellectual property (a term I hate as it implies knowledge is owned) but more to do with greed and profit. And interestingly it’s a profit that Holden has forgone by virtue of no map data updates sicne 2017 (which contain 2016 or earlier map data)… on a product still under warranty

There is no applauding Holden’s behaviour, so I can’t understand why people use bad bahaviour by other businesses to justify bad behaviour itself.

Bad is bad.. And Apple is no beacon of shining light. They have been convicted in multiple countries on multiple occasions for going against multiple consumer and other laws. But they spend their lobbying dollars in an attempt to gain even more control of the products we buy and supposedly own (sadly with no quiet possession) and the market place they sell within.

Hopefully the push for right to repair laws in the USA goes far enough to return product ownership and control back to the consumer. Hopefully such laws will filter down under, cause at the moment it sucks as Holden won’t release a map data update and won’t allow anyone else to get into the game… FFO really…

we could update the maps ourselves if they would just release the packaging process for the map data, the actual map data is the same across many devices but it is how gm has packaged and encrypted it that hinders any attempt.
there will more than likely be a encryption key used to package the update data and the mylink will have that key stored to decrypt it and without that key we are pretty much screwed.

in the usa the same headunits that are in our gm vehicles have wifi connectivity for ota updates but for some reason they decided to disable that functionality here.
my zb mylink has the wifi hardware on board but it is disabled in software.

i think it will go the other way and the systems will be more locked down with many features being moved to a subscription based service, monthly fees for heated seats, maps, sports mode, remote start.
people will buy a vehicle then have to have a package like foxtel that has options added tailored to suit what the user wants with a single monthly fee and they will say you can switch features when you like to "save money" like no heated seats in the summer.

They only allow third-party app installation because, as I said earlier, they don't have dealers to support.
Not related to this comment ... but in future, I'm intending that so long as an appliance has an OS & apps, it's going to be an OS which is widely supported. Currently that's Android, it's been great having the Vodafone TV as an Android device and install an app to play/access pretty-much anything on it. :)

Technically-speaking, how does that work?
Inbuilt SIM or something?
