Are you looking for slicks or radials?

I used to use Yokohama A509 for the odd track day very very good levels of gril dry or wet, they are no longer produced but their replacement A539 is supposed to be even better. Be warned grip comes at a price they will wear out lots quicker than a normal tyre.

If your looking for slick you will need suitable suspension & chassis bracing a car will behave totally different on slicks than on radials.

For slicks check out Bridgstone tyres you may need a couple of sets depending on the day I havent seen them in 17" on a early commodore though I have run 15" slicks which were good, you need to make sure you pressures are lots lower than normal road tyres from memory I was runing around 18-20 psi
For Ciruit racing check out RE540s Bridgestones they are a grooved slcik and may be better for a road going car

cheers
Scott
