Pressue is also created on 'overlap', when the intake is opening and the exhaust is closing.
Hence the 'backfire'.
A rag over the spark plug is not a reliable method of checking which end of the ignition cycle you are on.

And sucking a heap of air creates a backfire too...

Might be wise you check out the picture the OP posted of the T-piece at the back of the intake manifold and you'll see

I used to use a screw driver in the spark plug hole and watch it going up and down like I was going to hypnotise it or something. Dad taught me that. Then do the dizzy thing. Not sure if that’s a thing to do? I like the rag idea.

This thread is giving me flash backs.

Would be way cheaper to use a vacuum manifold.
$45.

Can add in what ever barb size you need and it’s good for other vacuum lines too. Could put it somewhere tidier.

Thread a brass barb into the hole you have there. Run it to the manifold.

rotate engine until harmonic balancer points to tdc and distributor rotor points to number 1 on cap
remove rocker cover and check number 1 inlet and exhaust valves are both closed
As above ^^^^ for TDC,

By memory, I think there is a line on the edge of the housing the cap sits on, that represents number 1 cyl,
Line the centre of the rotor up with that, and that will TDC,
And should start and run,
Then just need a timing light to adjust it to approx 6deg btdc.

Thread locked.

Maybe some of the smart arses in this thread might realize we don't all live online to keep the little kiddies in check.

Will clean this up later and give out a few warnings and bans me thinks and I'll open it again.

It's not smart to insult forum staff.

Ok, thread back open.

If you have nothing constructive to add then simply don't post, lets all be adults for a while.
