This will cause vacuum problem too. Does one of these hoses go to the brake booster?

Get another t piece (i think thats whats its called) I believe you can get them in metal? If so, get the metal one. It'll last longer.

This may not fix all your issues? But it maybe a start?
That is why it wont run. Clean both insides with a q tip soaked with thinners or acetone and a 20mm section of narrow metal tubing (copper tube works a treat) araldited to the fitting half way in the intake side and then same to the upper xmas tree works a treat as a joint and can work as a "temporary" or 5 year repair....

You can buy brass fittings to go into the manifold and attach all the hoses to them.....

Common thing for those to break...Plastic gets brittle after 40+ years coping the heat from the exhaust

Oh and replace those rubber hoses...The one shown in the picture will be sucking more air than a normal person does walking round.

Not real nice to get a car running

You have a mis-timed spark.
Undo the distributor, lift the body until rotor spins freely, then rotate the button until it's 180° from your starting point.

Pressue is also created on 'overlap', when the intake is opening and the exhaust is closing.
Hence the 'backfire'.
A rag over the spark plug is not a reliable method of checking which end of the ignition cycle you are on.

ok , we will check tdc compression the hard way
rotate engine until harmonic balancer points to tdc and distributor rotor points to number 1 on cap
remove rocker cover and check number 1 inlet and exhaust valves are both closed

it seems to be impossible for me to find any information on how to do things
buy the workshop manual the Gregorys will do. If you look down the throat of the carby and operate the accelerator linkage do you see it squirting fuel into the motor? You'll waste a couple of hundred dollars by the time you replace the broken thermal vacuum switches you better start going to swap- meets if you buy the manifold fittings and vac switches off ebay it will bleed you dry
