I need to be able to open the tailgate on my '06 VZ Executive wagon from the inside and I was wondering if anyone else had tried this before I go taking the tailgate apart to figure out how to do it.

Only way I can think of is pull the plastic panel above the carpet, then the carpet, and use your hand/tools to operate the mechanism.

When I go camping I usually sleep in the back of the wagon so I'm looking for a way to create a permanent opening mechanism from the inside.

When l sleep in the back of my wagon my head is near the front seats. I get in & out via a back door.

Simple process.
As above, remove plastic panel, remove carpet, set up a lever attached to the cable/mechanism in the tail gate, then replace carpet and plastic trim.

How about getting a sedan boot lock/unlock solenoid from the wreckers. Wire that in and place the switch within arms reach from the back.
Then you could unlock the tailgate without even getting out of bed :)

Still have to push the tailgate up.
The bloody things weigh a tonne.
I have to be ever careful with mine not to try and lift it using the panel above the button because the panels break very easily.
I have to push the button with one hand and lift the tailgate with the other hand where the number plate light is.
And it is not the struts, they are as new and hold the tailgate up no problem.
Partner has an ASX and all we do with that is push the button and raise it, using one hand.
