So I'll try to explain my problem in as much detail as possible

I recently discovered that the coolant temp sensor was broken, it was throwing a code (I didn't see the code myself, the mechanic did). So I found that the sensor itself broke where it attaches to the connector.

I changed the sensor and it worked fine, until it threw another check engine light, random stalls while driving or idling, the radiator fan kicks in even if the car was still cold, the temperature gauge increases and gives me a warning that it's too hot when it clearly isn't, and when it does that, I shut off the car and the fan is still turned on. I turn the car into the start position, then the fan shuts off and the temp gauge comes back to normal, but the check engine light is still on.

I discovered that the wire is severely damaged and badly scored due to heat.

Whenever I try to move this wire it stalls the car, hence the engine sometimes stalls while I'm driving too. Probably because the wind and vibrations are moving the wire around. And I uploaded a video demonstrating the issue.

BY THE WAY, the car NEVER takes that long to start or start this poorly, I do not know if this sensor is causing this to happen or something else, and I hope someone can chime in on the issue.

How can I fix this wire when it's part of the engine wiring harness? Isn't it too risky to hook up a new wire and connector? Or should I just buy a new engine wiring harness?

Your problems relate to the faulty coolant temperature sensor connector.

You need to purchase a replacement connector/wire like in the link below. You can then splice the wires from the harness with the wires from the replacement connector. You can also purchase little shrink wrap cylinders that have integrated solder. You just bare a small section of each wire and plug in the wires you want to join into the opposite ends of one of these cylinders. Heat the cylinder with a heat gun and the solder melts, the shrink wrap shrinks, and gives you a perfect join.

Alternatively, an auto electrician can do this for you.

Thanks for posting the link, never knew this stuff was available other than from Holden.

agree just get another wire and connector maybe wreckers or new. with mine I pulled off the tube and found that it had 2 wires touching each other arching it out. mine didn't have any slack so when I rewired it I left it with slack and also put on my heat shrink tube more then necessary so if it ever breaks in the future it will be bare wires on heat shrink tube as a protection method :) heat shrink also works with a hair dryer and around areas that don't have fuel you can use a lighter too :)

Thanks guys. It turns out that the wire was the source of all my troubles. I replaced it with a new ACDelco wire and connector and the problem seems to have disappeared.

Can you please explain the exact location of the coolant temp sensor?

You should post your question in the VE forum, assuming that you are asking a question about your ride. If not, specify the Commodore model you are referring to (we are not mind readers!).

Thought the post was for VE since 'Google' took me to this thread. And the posts helped me figure things out.
All good found the cooling temp sensor :) yes to clarify I was refering to VE 2009 model.

hey mate
my car also has a damaged wire connecting to the temp sensor. it also chucks the engine light aswell
it only comes up when the car is in motion tho
sorry just trying to chase up if this could be an issue ?

Have a look in the electrical section. I posted some threads about de-pinning factory connectors. How to re pin. What types of connectors are around. This info is critical for us to keep our cars running and looking as they should into the future.
The sources for those videos are some of the best in the Southern Hemisphere so take the advice.
Specialised tools are needed. The correct connectors purchased and the repair made.
You will learn a cool new skill and be super stoked with what you can do.
