Hi guys.

I'm new here, but the rust bucket I've just brought tells me I'll be here quite often.

She's a 89 VL Royale - RB30e.

When you give it a bit of gas, even just a little, it splutters, coughs, and sometimes dies - and smoke comes out the pod.
The worrying thing is, the belts begin to turn backwards just before it dies.

Have a look here:

Try running a diagnostics on your ECU and see if any errors come up. How are the spark plugs, leads, crank angle sensor etc? Your timing could be way off as well

To me that maf pipe doesn't look like the standard pipe (connected to your pod filter) - Does it have a MAF sensor attached to it and is it plugged in?

Yep it's standard, the sensor is out of shot, but it's plugged in.

The timing belt might have jumped a tooth or two. It looks like it is trying to fire while the inlet valves are still open. I would be checking the timing belt tensioner and make sure the cam timing is set correctly.

For starters get the wank factor pod of a na rb30....
This is a sign that your airflow is kaput. Pull it and inspect the hot wire inside it.(thinner than hair)Try another one. Or check the plug on the air flow Meter under the rubber boot that the wires have not corroded of or snapped.
The smoke is basically combustion gasses coming back out as ur holding the throttle plate open on a backfire.

sounds like it has a major exhaust leak also which would contribute to running like crap.
