Have a VL V8 that needs a rear main seal. I was talking to a mechanic that said he could put a new one in by dropping the transmission, is this possible. Have been told by most that the motor has to come out.

Ideally the engine should come out, crank out, to fit the new rope seal (its in 2 halves), it needs to be straighten then soaked in oil for 24hrs prior before been "rolled in" & trimmed. The good motor reconditions have a "plug" that presses the seal in, trimmed to suit, then a small amount of sealant on the ends before refitting the crank & caps. If they are not done properly it will still leak!

Thank you for your reply. That's what I thought, he was so positive he could do it, and the price he quoted me was a lot less than the other quotes I have had.
