VR UTE 5.0
Sorry to hijack your thread but how did you find upgrading your dash to a caprice dash. Im looking to replace a vr s pac ute dash with a statesman dash from a vs as id like to update to central locking and power windows. Also will prob upgrade climate control while im going. do you have any advice for someone who hasnt done one before?

Only advice I have is DONT! Haha nah the dash was a piece of cake. If yours was column shift like mine it can complicate it a little.

Install was bolt out old dash and loom and swap with caprice dash and loom. Everything should plug straight in with a couple other wires requiring a bit of work. I think dte and speedo require an extra wire to the ECM. I haven't done that wire yet but my speedo is functioning but 20km/h out. I did just add 19inch rims at same time though.

I'm also having issues with backlighting and a faulty cluster led. I would recommend giving the new cluster a good looking over as the green wiring panel thingo at the back can snag and break wires. Once again if you're column shift, the cluster will be a nightmare to squeeze in above the pnd123 area above wheel. Even with all this removed it was a very tight fit.

I did have to cut four wires that I'm yet to figure out their purpose. You shouldn't have to cut any wiring as I have heap of aftermarket crap that was integrated.

Heaps of other factors come into play which I'm unsure about. You'll need correct top loom if you have options like ac or fog lights etc.

I jumped in head first with little research so I'm only really familiar with my model dash and ute.

Worthwhile upgrade as it looks a million times better. You will also need different door cards or at least the top section to match the height of the dash. If you have manual external mirrors, the statesman door card will not fit (can be easily modified).

Climate control looks like another headache I am not willing to attempt just yet. Power windows I am also unsure about sorry.

Hope something above may help in someway, apologies for the vague info.

Below is dodgy diagram I did of my old loom with the wiring I had to cut. Posting it in hope someone knows what these wires are.

Brakes are coming along beautifully. Still only running the hsv four pot fronts and standard rear but she handles perfectly. Master cylinder keeping up well (1 inch bore standard it urea apparently - bonus). Rang brake specialists and no one can give me a clear answer why the bolts are different on my diff housing preventing the rears to fit.

Gave her a bath and new set of tyres. 19s kinda growing on me but only because they came free on a car I bought for parts.

Painted windown surround piece. Scored a free oil catch can but fairly pointless on a "new" engine apparently. Might install and run for a month to see if any action.

Fender prepped and primed. Still a little work prior to paint yet

Tried three different clusters

Cluster 1- faded Middle LCD but has speedo function on left LCD. No park brake light. No fuel

Cluster 2 - engine temp warning beep constant on. No fuel gauge

Cluster 3 - left LCD does nothing? Fuel most accurate

All of the above still have no gauge backlighting, instant readouts or accurate speedo. Bit of work yet!

Re wired "security light" button in statesman dash to suit my aftermarket system.

Fender painted with light buff and polish. Will wait a week and give it proper buff and polish.

Likely going full respray, new skirts and maybe new rear.

Some custom work happening to the tub rails soon. Stay tuned!

Primed tub rails
Roof sanded and working on a little dent prior to primer
Primed one mirror

Tonight I need to fix up other mirror, bog and prime.
Sand and prime window surround piece
Sand and prime tub corner prices
Prime roof depending on primer stocks

Then I've got bumper, l/h fender, 2 doors, skirts and tub exterior to prepare. Prob paint it in two sittings as colour matching won't be a problem and I'm doing the worst bits first (most dings, paint damage etc)

Still have most of the above to finish..... Tonight! Going for paint tomorrow. Whatever isn't ready by tomorrow won't get painted for a couple weeks.

Purchased and installed tub liner genuine holden (sitting in place until I put tub rails back on.

Shortened some hoses and tidied more engine bay wiring.

Re wired and hid alarm system and screamer.

Picked up 10 burnout tyres cos they were cheap cheap

Add pics and progress this evening

Bonnet painted. Used one litre of paint on bonnet and one fender alone. Needs to be clear coated.

Bought UHF radio. Will install tomorrow IF I get bonnet open.... Chucked on spare old bonnet and it is stuck shut.

Wired up UHF. Aerial attatched using screw that holds plastic quarter glass surround at the back. Yet to figure where to install in cabin.

Found leak in radiator so I slapped In triple core alloy radiator. Need different power steering connections and need smaller radiator cap.

Bumper off and mucking around with trans cooler fitment. Tempted to remove aircon bits and use aircon fan to cool the trans cooler and wire it to the thermo fan.

Removed bracket for hard lid and preparing it for paint.

Replaced front indicators for bulbs that are clear when not lit yet light up orange. Fancy crap but same price as usual bulbs with a lot darker orange.

UHF installed in cabin and working beautifully. May mount aerial elsewhere down the track.

Spent the last three hours tidying up wiring and sorting the bay out further. Re routed throttle cable. Moved fuel reg to a more discreet area. Removed all unnecessary wiring. Re arranged positive and negative battery clamps.

Re routed fuel lines, "hid" a lot of wiring under conduit tubing. Tidying the fuse box headache now.

Cleaned brake booster and reservoir. Polished lower pipes. Tidied plug leads.

Will add pics once I've cleaned all my grubby prints off the bay and when I retire for the night
